Iran-Israel Conflict: A Delicate Balance
The conflict between Iran and Israel has escalated significantly since the missile launch on October 1, 2024. The attack, which involved approximately 300-370 missiles and drones, was a response to Israeli strikes on Iranian assets in Lebanon and Syria.
Diplomatic Relations
The diplomatic relations between Iran and Israel are non-existent and extremely volatile. Despite the lack of formal diplomatic channels, there have been indirect diplomatic activities, primarily through US-mediated back-channel talks and UN pressure. The US has urged a proportional response from Israel, while Iran has threatened further strikes if Israel does not cease its operations in Lebanon and Gaza.
UN De-escalation Efforts
The United Nations has been actively engaged in de-escalation efforts, including political condemnation, legal framework reinforcement, and humanitarian response. The UN General Assembly President, Annalena Baerbock, has condemned the military escalation, while the UN Fact-Finding Mission has called for restraint and compliance with the UN Charter. The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has warned of a looming humanitarian catastrophe and urged the parties to engage in diplomacy.
Humanitarian Situation
The conflict has resulted in significant humanitarian needs, with tens of thousands of civilians sheltering in makeshift shelters across Lebanon and the Gaza-adjacent area. The World Food Programme has warned that 45 million people could face acute hunger if hostilities persist through June 2026.
